Franz Haas
Founded in 1880, the winery has been passed down through eight generations to the firstborn son, each of whom has had the honour and responsibility of carrying the same name, Franz.
Primary Appellation: DOC Alto Adige Winemaker: Stefano Tiefenthaler Key Varietals: Pinot Nero
Since the mid-1980s, we have been focusing on Pinot Nero, a challenging grape variety that requires skillful cultivation and meticulous winemaking. We have always approached it with creativity and dedication, striving for perfection. This approach has enabled us to produce clean, balanced wines that reflect their terroir and the nature of their grape varieties.
To preserve the integrity and characteristics of our wines, as well as all the work that goes into producing them, we have used screw caps since 2007. From 2017 onward, we have used this closure on all our wines to ensure that all the work, as well as the days and nights that we dedicate to our products culminate with a wine that matches our commitment and expectations.
We are pioneers of systematic viticulture at high altitudes. In anticipation of climate change, we began acquiring vineyards at high altitudes in the early 2000s. At higher altitudes, our vineyards enjoy unspoiled nature, zero pollution, and intense light with no atmospheric interference. This kind of heroic viticulture is challenging at times, but the rewards of producing wine at these altitudes are worth the effort. Today, we work vineyards ranging from 220 to 1,150 meters in elevation. These vineyards present a great variety of microclimates and soils ranging from porphyritic sand to clay and limestone.
We have always given immense attention to our vineyards, which are grown sustainably and close to nature to enhance the natural process of cultivation and fertilization.
Another detail that distinguishes Franz Haas is the connection with the brilliant artist Riccardo Schweizer, the creator of our wine labels. Throughout his career, Schweizer had the opportunity to work with renowned artists such as Picasso, Chagall, Cocteau, Paul Éluard, and Le Corbusier.
Today, Maria Luisa Manna runs the winery with her children and a great team. Winemaker Stefano Tiefenthaler expertly crafts the wines with great flair, passion, and professionalism.
