Yalumba
For over 175 years, Yalumba has been writing one of Australia's greatest wine stories - and inviting others to be a part of it. Their story is shaped by the place, the people and their passion.
Primary Appellation: Barossa
Winemaker: Sam Wigan
Varietals: Cabernet Shiraz blends, Shiraz, Viognier, Grenache
Founded by Samuel Smith in 1849 under the mystery of moonlight alongside his son, Yalumba has remained fiercely independent, shaping the Australian wine industry through pioneering acts: establishing the Old Vine Charter, crafting barrels in our own cooperage, championing varietals like Viognier and the Great Australian Red, and running the country's most influential vine nursery.
Every bottle is a chapter – from the rarest wines crafted only in the finest vintages, to the approachable first bottles that open the door to discovery. And at the heart of it all stands The Signature – our hero wine, celebrating the people who make Yalumba what it is. Our story continues and is shared by all who pick up a bottle and create their own.
Our home in Barossa Barossa is our home, and it has been since 1849, when Samuel Smith planted the first vines at Yalumba. Today, Yalumba is home to some of Australia's oldest Shiraz vines, and the second-oldest Grenache vineyard in the world.
Continuous family ownership for six generations From 175+ years comes a family legacy steeped in exceptional craft and brilliant fine wine stories. Yalumba is Australia's oldest family-owned winery. Passed down through six generations of the Hill-Smith Family, there is an unwavering commitment and inherent desire to forge a future for Australian fine wine.
While we are grateful for and respectful of our past, it's our future that excites us the most. And always has done. Any business that has flourished across three centuries won't ever be accused of resting on its laurels or wishing for yesteryear. Now guided by fifth generation Robert Hill-Smith, with sixth generation Jessica and Lucy Hill-Smith also working within the business.
Committed to sustainable winemaking We prioritise biodiversity, soil and vine health, with an unwavering dedication to leaving the land in better condition than when it was inherited. We promise for every hectare of vineyard we own, we will plant or nurture one hectare of native vegetation on our land.
We are a proud member and early adopter of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia – our winery and 100% of our estate vineyards are certified, and we've supported our growers through the process to also become certified.
We are the first Australian winery to be recognised as a Gold Member of International Wineries for Climate Action under the Hill-Smith Family Estates group. We have partnered with SWA and IWCA to implement, promote and invest in research-backed emissions reductions strategies and innovation, and to be carbon neutral by 2050.
Old vines Yalumba tends some of Australia's oldest vineyards, the oldest dating back to 1889. Heritage vines embody the essence of our winemaking legacy, to value authenticity and diversity in wine above all else. We developed our own Old Vine Charter, and we are proud members of The Old Vine Conference, to recognise and promote the historic significance of these wines in the world of wine.
